BJP’s Bishnu Pada Ray Raises Eyebrows: Alleges Nehru “Gifted” Coco Islands to Myanmar

top-news

In a recent interview, Bishnu Pada Ray, a prominent BJP leader and Lok Sabha candidate from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, stirred controversy by claiming that India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had “gifted” the Coco Islands to Myanmar. Ray’s remarks, highlighting what he termed as the Congress’ “historical anti-India stance”, have sparked heated debates in political circles.

According to Ray, Nehru’s decision to give away the Coco Islands, which are part of the Northern Andaman Islands, to Myanmar, is now posing strategic challenges as these islands are currently under China’s direct control. Ray criticized the Congress for allegedly neglecting the islands during its decades-long rule, contrasting it with the current government’s efforts to bolster defence infrastructure in the region to counter China’s influence.

Emphasizing the shift in defence investments under the Modi-led government, Ray pointed out that significant funds have been allocated to enhance security and development in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. He also took a dig at the Congress, highlighting Prime Minister Modi’s regular visits to the region compared to the alleged indifference of Congress leaders in the past.

The ongoing political narrative in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands also includes discussions about the incumbent MP Kuldeep Rai Sharma of the Congress, who defeated a BJP candidate in the 2019 general elections. Ray expressed confidence that the BJP would secure victory in the upcoming elections, aiming for a “Congress-mukt Andaman”.

Additionally, the interview touched upon the Katchatheevu Island row with Sri Lanka, where PM Modi criticized the DMK and Congress for their handling of the agreement that ceded the strategic island to Sri Lanka in 1974. The BJP’s stance on reclaiming lost territories and safeguarding India’s interests has become a focal point in the political discourse, especially in states like Tamil Nadu and regions like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

As the electoral process kicks off with polling scheduled for April 19 in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the statements and promises made by political leaders like Bishnu Pada Ray are poised to influence voter sentiments and shape the outcome of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024.
